University of Mississippi Accessibility

In accordance with the goals and creed of the University of Mississippi, the university encourages excellence, inclusion and respect for the dignity of those with disabilities and will recognize and promote the value of individual differences.

Accessibility at UM

The University of Mississippi is committed to providing equal access to its educational services, programs, and activities in accordance with federal law and university policy. We seek to provide a welcoming and inclusive experience for all students, visitors, and employees of the university. We invite you to explore our accessibility services and resources, and please report any barriers to access you may encounter.

Support for everyone

We are committed to ensuring accessibility for all students, employees, and visitors.

Services

Faculty, staff, and students must register vehicles and acquire an appropriate permit through the Department of Parking & Transportation. A state-issued accessible parking permit does not provide parking access without the necessary permit.

To park in ADA designated stalls, faculty, staff and students must provide a state-issued handicap hangtag.

  • All individuals with handicap hangtags may park in any non-reserved spaces, including faculty/staff and student spots.
  • One may park in an ADA designated space or any other valid space on campus that is not otherwise marked with a University parking permit and ADA hangtag.
The Department of Parking and Transportation's Special Parking Accommodations also offers options for short-term and longer-term medical accessible parking options.

Visitors may park in ADA-designated parking spaces on campus, and some campus events will provide additional accessible parking spaces and lots.

The Oxford University Transit (OUT) system is free for all students, faculty, and staff members at the University of Mississippi with a valid UM ID and is available for use by visitors for $1 per ride. There are several, circular campus routes that stop at multiple, on and off campus locations frequented by students. All shuttles are wheelchair accessible with wheelchair lifts or ramps.
The OUT system also provides paratransit transportation services for riders with disabilities. All paratransit vehicles are wheelchair accessible. For information on the OUT Paratransit system, please visit the OUT website or call 662-234-3540.

Students who need captioning or sign language interpreting services will make those requests through their Rebel Access portal once accommodations have been approved through Student Disability Services.

Student Disability Services also provides sign language interpreting services for the campus community. Please reach out to Student Disability Services with details about the event where sign language interpreting is needed.

Live captioning is available for campus events by contacting accessibility@olemiss.edu.

The ability of students, faculty, staff, and visitors to access campus with the use of a service animal is a critical aspect of the University’s commitment to full inclusion for those with disabilities. To that end, the University follows all federal guidelines and regulations as they apply to service animals.

As defined by the US Department of Justice, a service animal is a dog, and in some cases, a miniature horse, that has been individually trained to perform a specific task, or tasks, for those with disabilities. There are no restrictions on the breed or size of a service dog. With an exception for reasonable health and safety issues, service animals may accompany their handler (the disabled person using the service animal) to any environment in which the general public is allowed. Service animals are not required to be registered or certified by any entity and handlers are not required to submit documentation indicating the animal is a service animal. They are also not required to wear identifying service animal vest or to carry a service animal license.
